Is this All There is?

Here is a little “happy” for those who are looking for a light, fresh new scent for the new year: I Love Love by Moschino.

With me, New year’s resolutions have gone the way of the New Year’s party. I don’t drink. I refuse to have anyone slobber me with a kiss. I will never let the year’s end be the beginning of anything for me. There is some kind of curse on New Year’s resolutions. Make one and it will fail before the holiday decorations are put up. A great time to make a new start is in October before the holidays undermine our progress. Another great starting place is around March. Nothing much is going on so plug in your goals and pray them through. Pray…them…through.

Prayer can be confusing, guilt inducing, and doesn’t work for lots of believers. They get disillusioned and give up. I got a tremendous breakthrough from the Lord one day at Walmart. If it wasn’t true, it would be hilarious. I am telling you this so that you can get hold of your prayer life. Maybe you’ve never had a prayer life. Here’s you chance to not only get a prayer life but go to a level of belief you could not have dreamed of. I have lived it so I know it can happen for any of God’s children.

Anywho, I was so depressed over (fill in the blank), that my chin was practically dragging the floor. I had to get groceries. As I came to the book and magazine rack, I thought: I’ll get a few magazines and that will make me feel better. There was not one magazine that appealed; something that never happens. In the book section, there was an odd book on the bottom shelf. Odd because it had some red and gold imaging on the book cover. I tried three times to pass by that book. Finally, my spirit heard, “pick it up .” I did and wanted to put it right back. The title was BREAKING CURSES AND ROUTING DEMONS, by John Eckhardt. First, I felt scared. Then I picked it up and read some of the introduction. My Spidey senses began to tingle. I handed it to my husband, still scared, and asked him to read what I had read. Typically, he would just say no and I was counting on that. Instead he told me to get it.

Spiritual warfare stood as anathema to me. I knew nothing of demons, their oppression, or their aggravations. Like most believers, I was scared of the term and completely ignorant of this subject. Though I was biblically literate, like a lot of folks, I skipped over the parts of the bible that I didn’t want to deal with. BIG MISTAKE.

I took the book home a began to do everything he wrote about. I went on nothing but faith. By the six month mark, I experienced a peace that seemed only a silly theory before. Remember that I had been very depressed the day I found the book. Now the air was clearing, my faith was growing, and all was well with my soul. I kept on praying the promises of God out loud . That was six years ago. Now I am happier than I ever thought possible.

I knew nothing of the bible promises that when prayed out loud, could change my life. But the word is alive and filled with power for overcoming:

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (ESV).

The supernatural power of God working through His word as I pray and agree with His word is beyond anything I had ever experienced in my church life. Before this, I had wondered, off and on, if this was all there was. A spiritual checklist:be good,  be at church as often as you can, and don’t tell anyone that you don’t even know why you are still interested in God at all. It isn’t that He hadn’t helped me, sustained me, and loved me. I knew that He had. But the word says there is so much more yet I could not lay hold of it. Now I plugged myself into His word, spoke it out loud, and my life changed in a wonderful way.

One of the things I also noticed, as I shared my testimony about this, made me so sad. People were suspicious of the word of God. They were unfamiliar with the promises of God. I told everyone I could get to listen to me about this wonderful way to approach their problems and get real breakthrough on them. Isn’t that what we all have wanted?

I leave this testimony here for your consideration. I have one friend who has embraced the scriptures in this wonderful way and their life changed, too. Another friend prayed for a time and then let the promises drop away. Look up the promises in the bible as you pray them. Stay with it.

If you have also wondered if this is all there is with God, try praying the promises of God for you and your loved ones out loud.

One last thought: Demons are defeated ghosts of their former selves, as is Satan. No one who has believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as savior and submitted to His lordship must endure the terrors of the enemy. We can do what Jesus did in the desert in His encounter with Satan; He spoke the word of God and Satan left him alone. The same happened to me as I prayed the promises…he left. No believer ought ever to be afraid of our defeated enemy. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, and I will continue in that vein. I am an overcomer.

The one who practices sin [separating himself from God, and offending Him by acts of disobedience, indifference, or rebellion] is of the devil [and takes his inner character and moral values from him, not God]; for the devil has sinned and violated God’s law from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8.

Let’s follow Jesus’ lead and put the enemy of our souls down with the promises of God. It works every time I pray the promises out loud. Your prayers can be answered.

Are you ready to be more than a conqueror? Are you ready to get the other half of your Christian pie? Find this book and do what the author says. Keep reading your bible, too. Let me know how life starts to turn out for you when you commit yourself to take in His promises. This is how you outfit your life.

Next post will have some ideas on how to do your devotional life without losing your mind.
